AAHPERD Releases Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education

For the first time ever, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD) has created grade-level outcomes that support the newly revamped National Standards for Physical Education. The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful activity.

"This is revolutionary!" said Cheryl Richardson, AAHPERD senior director for membership engagement and programming. "Through the new Standards & Grade Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education, we're offering physical educators across the country more guidance than ever before on how to mold students to recognize the value of sustaining a lifetime of physical activity."

The Outcomes are intended to be benchmarks that identify what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade. They will also provide a roadmap to track students' progress toward becoming physically literate individuals, the overall goal of the new national standards.

A six-person AAHPERD task force along with member feedback, led to the development of the Standards and Outcomes, including Lynn Couturier, SUNY College at Cortland, N.Y.; Stevie Chepko, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, S.C.; Shirley Holt/Hale, Linden Elementary School, Oak Ridge, Tenn. (retired); Brad Rettig, Schoo Middle School, Lincoln Neb.; Georgi Roberts, Fort Worth Independent School District, Texas; and Dan Persse, Blaine Elementary School, Blaine, Wash.

Physical educators can download the new National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education from AAHPERD's website. New and renewing members will receive the new Scope and Sequence for K-12 Physical Education brochure as a member benefit. The brochure includes a chart representing the grade levels at which physical skills and knowledge should be introduced and practiced. It also indicates when competency and application should occur.

Beginning April 1, 2014, look for the National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education publication, which will be available through AAHPERD's online book store and at the AAHPERD National Convention & Expo. It will offer:

  • Guidance on implementing new grade-level outcomes, including developing effective practice tasks.
  • Guidance on developing and implementing assessments that meet the new National Standards, including some sample assessments.
  • Critical elements for fundamental motor skill.
  • Scope and sequence for developing curriculum.
  • Supplemental resources, including guidelines for implementing technology; and Foundational document for PETE programs teaching curriculum development.

"The Outcomes can be adapted to fit within a physical education teacher's curriculum, culture and the time he/she has available for PE," Richardson added. "Implementing this entire package of both Standards and Outcomes will undoubtedly raise the bar for PE programs across the country."
