Dedicated solely to students of Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., Evans Commons is a major expansion to the Hyland Arena, which also was designed by Hastings & Chivetta Architects. Completed in August 2011, Evans Commons is designed to be a one-stop shop with space for fitness, intramurals, dining, laundry, student government, games, movies and more.

The building serves the recreation, relaxation and socialization needs of students, and is the first building on campus to incorporate in one place the range and quality of amenities offered here. Student input was vital to the design of this facility. Students and administration visited many college campuses to gain an impression of what they would like in their facility, and the designers were able to incorporate the best of what they saw.

Long-term value exists in the sustainable design program. Building systems were designed for energy efficiency, sustainable materials were sourced, and skylights and windows used throughout the facility for natural lighting. All to-go dining packaging is made out of bamboo and sugar cane and compostable packaging that was not previously offered.

Evans Commons captures the scale, proportions and materials of the campus' architecture, which includes structures from the late 1800s through the 21st century. Throughout the facility, windows let natural light inside, while providing views of the picturesque campus. The architectural expression exudes a residential warmth, making students feel at home.

Designed to serve as both student union and recreation facility, the building's main entry level contains a two-story skylit concourse, providing a welcoming entry for visitors. It connects to the main axis of the existing Hyland Arena and offers views to the three-court and MAC gymnasiums below. Just off the entry are mail boxes and laundry. The rest of the first floor includes dining services.

The lower-level gym has three basketball courts and can be converted to an event space for concerts and student events. The gym includes seating for 400. Adjacent to the gym is a MAC court for inline hockey and soccer. Also on the lower level are a fitness center, multipurpose rooms for fitness classes and locker rooms.

The upper level contains a three-lane suspended jogging track encircled by additional fitness space, including ADA-accessible fitness equipment. Also on this level are a game room, music rooms and movie rooms with 55-inch HDTVs, which also gives students the ability to hook up their game consoles.

The variety of amenities provided in this building is an unprecedented step for Lindenwood University. While many of the services offered were available in other areas of campus, the combination of them in one place is a great boon to recruitment and retention, and the creation of a welcoming "home" for students.
