Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park
Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park in Woodridge, Ill., has been the main attraction for the Woodridge Park District since 1997. The Cajun-themed park that mimics green space and vegetation found in the Louisiana Bayou features unique water attractions, including the 600-foot lazy river, a competition pool and six waterslides. But just last year, the park district took its popular aquatic park a step further by completing a new addition—one that caters to children less than 42 inches tall, as well as people with disabilities.
The new section to the 8-acre park features several innovative attractions, including a new 5,260-square-foot bayou-themed spray playground that consists of two separate areas and a body flume slide. The first area—designed for the youngest patrons—features small dumping buckets, waterwheels, water geysers and a fan boat slide. For families with children of different ages, the spray playground is divided into two pods. The first pod is geared toward children up to age 5, while the second pod features a shrimp boat play structure of varying levels featuring an over-sized dumping bucket and multiple slides.
The second area of the new addition is an ADA-accessible bayou shrimp boat play structure with overhead rope pulls, water curtains, jets, slides, water guns and an oversized dumping bucket. Both areas incorporate lifelike bayou wildlife replicas of frogs, raccoons, possums, cranes and crayfish. Other new amenities include a second program pool with a permanent ADA-accessible ramp into the basin and an ADA-accessible ramp to the entertainment stage that is used for birthday parties and special events.
The main goal of the project was to increase the recreational value for users. While Cypress Cove attracts guests of all ages, it was apparent that younger children were unable to enjoy certain attractions because of height restrictions. The addition of the spray playground and body flume slide is designed specifically for children under 42 inches in height and non-swimmers.
