Wytheville Recreation & Meeting Center
he new 105,000-square-foot Wytheville Recreation & Meeting Center in Wytheville, Va., boasts something special for the economically disadvantaged, rural mountainous area of southwest Virginia.
The center was created to not only improve the quality of life there, but to promote economic development and assist the adjacent community college—that donated the land for construction—with educating more qualified child care specialists.
The recreation center features a three-dimensional, 35-foot climbing wall with 11 different climbing routes. Walking and jogging enthusiasts use the one-eighth-mile indoor walking/jogging track, located on the second floor, which runs right through the entry lobby and links up with the interior street and all major recreation activities. The multipurpose gymnasium accommodates two full-court basketball courts, three official-size volleyball courts and three badminton courts. The natatorium includes a six-lane lap pool that flows under a bridge to a zero-depth entry waterpark that features a slide, fountains and numerous play features. The pool deck, which has a therapy pool and hot tub, was designed to accommodate people with disabilities by including a zero-depth entry, easy access stairs with rails, chair lifts and an aquatics wheelchair.
To boot, the recreation center offers a 4,000-square-foot fitness center that consists of top-of-the-line strength equipment, cardiovascular equipment and free weights, a dance and aerobics studio, two racquetball courts, youth center and café, senior citizen lounge and three multi-purpose rooms.
Meanwhile, the meeting center, which is considered to be the economic development component of the facility, includes a 9,200-square-foot grand ballroom that can accommodate groups of up to 1,000. The recreation department uses this area for sports awards banquets, concerts, senior dances and various other programs. Furthermore, three additional smaller meeting rooms are available for breakout sessions or meetings of up to 100. Between the two meeting areas is a 2,000-square-foot lobby that is ideal for registrations and exhibits.
Impressive mountain views can be seen through windows on one wall of the ballroom and in all the smaller meeting rooms.
The child development center, operated by Wytheville Community College, is licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services and is part of the College's Early Childhood Education Program. The center, which accommodates about 90 children, provides families with quality care for infants and children between the ages of 2 months through age 12. Services include child care, drop-in care for recreation pass plan holders, preschool development activities, nutritious meals and language enrichment.
